El Paso prepares to receive Shakira

With over 140 awards and more than 250 nominations, Shakira, the world-renowned singer and dancer will shake and sway her hips in El Paso Oct. 12-13 at the Don Haskins Center.

"I can't wait to sing and dance to all her music," said Anabel Gonzalez, senior education major. "I am very excited."

Gonzalez is not the only one waiting in anticipation for Shakira's concert. According to the organizers, the 8,000 tickets available for the Oct. 12 concert have already been sold.

"I bought my tickets during the pre-sales," Gonzalez said. "I was glad cause they ended up running out."

Since there was such a popular demand for tickets, organizers added a second concert for Oct. 13, said Jorge Vasquez, interim director of Special Events. Tickets for this concert are still on sale.

"We hope we can sell out for the second concert too," Vasquez said.

Vasquez is the main person behind the concert at UTEP. He will be taking care of everything and making sure all goes according to plan.

"The job is very demanding," Vasquez said. "You have to work well under stress."

From promoting the venue and meeting with the touring company to holding conferences with the company and artist, Vasquez finds himself managing every aspect of the event.

It all started when Live Nation, a touring company, called UTEP to see if any venues were available for the concert. If the artist likes the location, Live Nation signs a contract with UTEP for the venue and date.

"You are basically lucky if the route the artist has planned consists of your venue," Vasquez said.

Shakira has sold out four shows in El Paso since 2002.

With over 300 people helping at UTEP and over 500 Live Nation employees, the stage is built the day of the concert.

"I am very eager to see this year's show," said Christina Garcia, freshman math major. "The last one I went to was awesome."

Garcia said that the show was not only great, but seeing Shakira perform live was mesmerizing.

"If anything new, I wish I could meet Shakira," Garcia said.
