Shakira keeps entertaining with adorably nutty antics

In Shakira’s new single, “Loca,” the hip-shaking Colombian joyously sings I’m crazy but you like it.

And she’s right. Those lyrics absolutely sum up why audiences in the United States have come to love (or hate) the songstress since she released her first crossover album in 2001.

She is kind of crazy. Who else would writhe around like a sexy “She Wolf” one day and then release the globally friendly World Cup anthem, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” soon after?

And recently, while she was filming her latest video, Shakira ran through the streets of Barcelona as a guerrilla camera crew filmed her dancing with strangers and illegally jumping in fountains.

With her new album “Sale el Sol” coming out on Tuesday and a concert at the Sports Arena on Friday night, let’s relive some of Shakira’s lovably insane moments:

2000: Before her first English album was set to be released, the singer colored her more innocent-looking long, brown hair blond.

Later, at the debut of the Latin Grammy Awards, Shakira stole the show in a tight red bodysuit and introduced her trademark belly dancing to American audiences.

2002: Though her English album “Laundry Service” was one of the best-selling albums that year, the lyrics were criticized for being silly or getting lost in translation. So the singer perfected her English and began writing in both languages rather than getting the words translated.

2006: “Hips Don’t Lie” was released and cemented her as a bona fide sex symbol. Or as her duet partner, Wyclef Jean, sings in the song, “She makes a man want to speak Spanish.”

2008: Shakira signed a 10-year contract with Live Nation that’s estimated to be worth between $70 million and $100 million, making her one of the highest-paid female musicians around.

2009: Have you seen the video for “She Wolf”? It doesn’t really get more insane than that.

2010: There was a storm of controversy after Shakira was selected to sing the 2010 World Cup anthem; people wondered why a Colombian woman was picked to represent Africa. She got her revenge by making the song so annoyingly catchy we couldn’t stop singing it for months. • (619) 293-1284 • Twitter @sdutNightDay
